25 years ago, a cat interrupted an Athletics game and changed Tony La Russa's life

25 years ago, a cat changed La Russa's life

It's easy to fall into a routine. We wake up, brush our teeth, go to work, watch all of "Daredevil" on Netflix in the span of mere days, etc. Little is done to change that routine. There's comfort in it.

25 years ago today, Tony La Russa shook his up. After a cat ran onto the field as the Athletics took on the Yankees, delaying the game as it sprinted around the field, La Russa put it in the A's clubhouse so it would be safe. After the game was over, he drove the cat from shelter to shelter, becoming disheartened that all of them would have to euthanize the animal.

So La Russa decided to start his Animal Rescue Foundation. Since they opened in 1991, the Foundation has helped find homes for over 30,000 dogs and cats and spayed and neutered over 28,000 more to keep pet overpopulation down. And all because a cat ran onto a field.

It also means that La Russa's Twitter feed is filled with some of the most adorable baseball-meets-cute-pets photos this side of Marnie

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have millions of cute animal pictures to scroll through. Back in (checks Google), 800,000 years. That's my new routine.
