45 years ago today, Ernie Banks hit his 500th home run

On May 11, 1970, there were eight members of the 500 home run club. On May 12, in the second inning of a game against the Braves, Cubs shortstop/first baseman Ernie Banks homered into the left-field bleachers:

Guess who got to join the club next?

As you can see in the video above, fans were overjoyed -- even the camera was happy. Like everyone else at Wrigley, it was bouncing up and down with enthusiasm:

But, perhaps the person most uniquely positioned to really understand the scope of what Mr. Cub had achieved was umpire Frank Secory. Secory officiated the 1953 game in which Banks hit his first home run and was on the field when he hit his 500th.
