After 0 ABs in the Minors, pitching prospect Mike Foltynewicz doubles in first MLB start

Foltynewicz doubles in first MLB start

Pitching prospect Mike Foltynewicz signed a professional contract right out of high school. Folty was drafted 19th overall by the Astros in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft and has spent the last half decade climbing the ranks through the Minors.

Now with the Braves, Folty earned a win in his Braves debut on Friday, surrendering five hits, three walks and two earned runs over five innings against the Reds. It was his first career start (he made a handful of appearances for the Astros in 2014). Most impressively, though, Folty helped his cause by plating two runs with a double to left-center.

The most amazing part about Folty doubling in his first career start is that he had never had an at-bat in professional baseball before Friday. From 2010-15, Folty appeared in 120 games between the Appalachian League to the Triple-A International League. He made 16 relief appearances for the Astros last year, but never stepped in the box.

Guess we should amend that old adage to say, "If you don't use it, you retain your skill so that you can contribute on a big stage in arguably the most pressure-filled situation of your life."
