On this date in 2001, the D-backs walked off as World Series champions

The 2001 World Series, between the Yankees and the D-backs, did not lack for storylines. A week's worth of games were postponed following the 9/11 attacks, pushing the Fall Classic later than it had ever been to that point. That allowed Derek Jeter to claim the "Mr. November" moniker in a back-and-forth Series that also saw D-backs closer Byung-Hyun Kim allow crucial late home runs in consecutive games and Randy Johnson credited with three wins.

But it's hard to top the drama of a walk-off win in Game 7 of the World Series - which Arizona pulled off when Luis Gonzalez's bloop single scored Jay Bell. And who did Gonzo do it off of? Just some guy named Mariano Rivera.

This certainly wasn't a high point in Mo's superlative career, as he entered with a 1-0 lead before committing a throwing error and hitting a batter en route to a 2-1 loss.

It was a rare misstep for the future Hall of Famer, and anomalous in a series that featured some great pitching from great pitchers -- Curt Schilling and Johnson were named co-MVPs.
