Astros honor top 2012 Minor Leaguers at Minute Maid Park

The Astros celebrated their future on Friday night, recognizing their Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year.
Delino DeShields, Jr., son of the former big league second baseman, was the Astros Minor League Player of the Year. DeShields was the first player in the modern era to steal more than 100 bases and hit at least 10 home runs in one Minor League season. He stole 101 bases and sent 12 balls over the fence during his combined time at the Class A and Class A advanced levels. The infielder was also named to the Baseball America Minor League All-Star team.
“Last year was kind of rough,” DeShields said. “It was my first year playing second base, and it was a big learning experience for me. This year, I finally got to put the pieces together and it turned out good.”
Minor League Pitcher of the Year Mike Foltynewicz recorded a 3.14 ERA over 152 innings of work at the Class A level. He finished the season with a 14-4 record and 125 strikeouts. Foltynewicz was also named the South Atlantic League Most Outstanding Pitcher.
“I had pretty good success this year, and I want to keep it going,” Foltynewicz said.
