Beat the Streak in a Day players fall short of Joe D's mark -- and $5.6 million grand prize.
MLB.com's Beat the Streak game, in which fans try to correctly choose a player to get a hit for 57 straight days (thus beating Joe DiMaggio's MLB hit streak record), has been going strong for 12 years. Several gamers have come close, but nobody has collected the $5.6 million prize yet.
On Friday, Streakers got a chance to change that in one day -- but it was not to be.
Contestants had the opportunity to choose not one player in 57 days, but 57 players in one day. If anyone's 57 picks all collected a hit, that person would take home the full $5.6 million.
The nine most popular selections were:

- Derek Jeter (64.80)
- Mike Trout (64.28)
- Robinson Cano (60.95)
- Ryan Braun (60.85)
- Buster Posey (58.63)
- Andrew McCutchen (58.06)
- Albert Pujols (56.69)
- Prince Fielder (55.73)
As of 11:30 p.m. ET, seven contestants were still in the running and one contestant was a perfect 32-for-32.
A half hour later, only four remained. By the time the night's full slate of games had ended, each contestant had been eliminated.
The top score for the day was 43, and the average Streaker got 31 players right. The longest streak before having a player go hitless was 37. One participant also got 47 wrong, which is actually harder than getting 47 right, so kudos for that.
