Bernie Williams takes on Jason Varitek in New York vs. Boston Cupcake Competition

By Gary Cotton / MLB.com

What does a New York Pinstripe Pretzel cupcake taste like?

It's sweet, on account of the buttercream frosting and butterscotch chips, and a little salty thanks to a special New York-inspired ingredient.

"We try to be inspired by our environment," said Sophie LaMontagne, co-founder of Georgetown Cupcake. "What's more 'New York' than pretzels?"

Maybe the five-time Yankees All-Star and four-time World Series champ eating them.

Bernie Williams attended Georgetown Cupcake's New York vs. Boston Cupcake Competition on Tuesday. The cupcake shop will be a house divided, as founding sisters LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis try to outsell each other with their Yankees and Red Sox-themed cupcakes. Proceeds from each cupcake sold will benefit local charities. The New York funds will go to The Hillside Food Outreach, a charity Williams works with that delivers groceries to needing families.

"They feed families in Westchester and Putnam counties, where I live," Williams said. "[It's] not only the amount of money you can raise, but creating awareness about the charity and what they're all about."

Eating a few cupcakes in the process is an added plus. The former Yankees star said he's had his fill, and even got behind the counter to make some of the pastries himself. LaMontagne said Williams is a natural.

"He was rocking the frosting bag," LaMontagne said.  "He is super talented not only in baseball and music, but he's pretty good in the kitchen too."

The competition will last for 12 days, with the last New York cupcakes selling Sunday, July 22. Kallinis will then team with former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek to sell Red Sox-inspired cupcakes in Boston.

Williams said he hasn't tried the "Green Monstah" yet, but is looking forward to it.

"I'm dying to try it," Williams said. "That would give me an idea of how fierce the competition's going to be."
