Billy Hamilton decided he wanted to score on a grounder to third, so he did
Proof Billy Hamilton takes whichever bases he wants
Billy Hamilton has a way of simply taking whichever bases he pleases. We're very early into the second half of the season, and he already has 45 stolen bases. He's on pace for the most since 1988, and even maybe/sorta has an outside shot at 100. But even when he's not stealing bases, he's doing things that just shouldn't be possible on the basepaths.
After singling, stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error in the eighth inning of Friday's Reds win over the Indians, Hamilton stood on third base with no outs. Brandon Phillips knocked a grounder to Cleveland third baseman Giovanny Urshela, who checked Hamilton before throwing over to first to nab Phillips for an out.
And then Hamilton decided to, well, be Billy Hamilton.
As soon as the ball left Urshela's hand, B-Ham took off. He slid into home on a play that wasn't nearly as close as it should have been and gave the Reds an insurance run, padding their lead to 6-1.
It just goes to show, even if you think you have Hamilton checked -- even if he pretends to be checked -- he never truly is.
"That's what Hamilton can do," Indians manager Terry Francona said after the game.
B-Ham's gonna B-Ham.
