Bob Sheppard, 'The Voice of Yankee Stadium,' retired on this date in 2009

"Now batting for the Yankees, Number 2, Derek Jeter, Number 2 ..."
Some referred to him as the "Voice of God." His Monument Park plaque reads "The Voice of Yankee Stadium."
Bob Sheppard and his intonations became synonymous with Yankee Stadium during his 58 years in the P.A. booth. His clear and consistent annunciations introduced Yankees greats like DiMaggio, Mantle, Berra and Jackson. A game without hearing Sheppard's voice just seemed wrong.
Well, on Monday, we honor Bob officially retiring from the game in 2009. He passed away the following July at the age of 99.
Luckily, Jeter had a special Sheppard recording made that still announces his at-bats at the new Stadium. Let's hope the Yanks shortstop continues to play for a few more years so we can hear that iconic voice just a little bit longer.
