Brett Gardner makes nice leaping catch, looks fresh to death while doing it

Brett Gardner makes leaping catch in white cleats

With the sun shining on Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the Highlanders took on the Marinemen of the Pacific Northwest, first-time All-Star Brett Gardner raced back to make a nice leaping grab off the bat of Austin Jackson in the top of the third inning.

Which is fine and all, but I'd rather we focused on something more important. Namely, how fashionable Gardner looks with his brilliantly white cleats sparkling in the sun. Be careful, you may need to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes when looking at these -- otherwise you may end up like the Major Arnold Toht from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when his face melts.

Gardner's white cleats

It's a rare look, one we're more used to seeing on the Athletics or on Jerry Seinfeld. But does this mean that Gardner is looking to be at the front to bring back the halcyon cleat days of the '70s and '80s when teams like the Padres and Astros joined in on the crisp and clean look?

One thing's for certain: If Gardner is the firebrand for a fashion movement, this punches his ticket to Cooperstown, regardless of anything he ever has or ever will do on the field. It also means that we must remain vigilant in ensuring that players only opt for white cleats with high cuffs.

After all, we don't want this low-pant look, do we? (Face obscured to protect the fashion-guilty.)
