7 key moments from Wednesday's Cardinals-Red Sox World Series Game 1
It's finally World Series time! The Cardinals and Red Sox threw down at Fenway Park in what ended up as a blowout in Boston's favor. Let's GIF it up.
Things got off to an odd start in the bottom of the first when what looked like a Pete Kozma error on a play at second was called an out. The umpires huddled, and reversed the call to the right one:
That resulted in a bases-loaded situation, and Mike Napoli put the Sox on top early. He blasted a double to left-center, clearing the bases. The three-run outburst was capped by an exuberant David Ortiz slide:
Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina are both Gold Glove winners. It's safe to say this moment, in the bottom of the second, was not their proudest in the field:
After Stephen Drew reached on that ... mistake (don't call it an error, since it wasn't scored as one), Boston loaded the bases again. Dustin Pedroia knocked an RBI single, and the bases were loaded again. Ortiz stepped up with a chance to replicate his grand slam from ALCS Game 2. He came oh so close -- but Carlos Beltran wasn't having it:
With one on in the bottom of the seventh and Ortiz at the plate, the Cardinals brought in lefty Kevin Siegrist to keep him in the park. Siegrist hadn't given up a homer to a left-handed hitter all year. (Actually, he only gave up one to any hitter all year.) Do you think that mattered to Papi? It did not:
Jon Lester pitched a gem for Boston and didn't give up a run in 7 2/3 innings of work. He struck out eight Cardinals and generally kept St. Louis from squaring him up all game, which was illustrated most clearly by this incredible saw-off of Allen Craig's bat:
Down 8-0 in the ninth, Matt Holliday broke up the shutout with an impressive solo shot to left-center:
But that was all the Cardinals would get. Boston prevailed 8-1 to take a 1-0 series lead, and both squads will be at it again on Thursday night for Game 2 at Fenway.
