For those who aren't fluent in baseball position numbers, a 5-8 forceout means a third baseman threw a ball to a center fielder. You might then wonder: "But do outfielders have bases on which they can record outs?"
Normally, no. But during Thursday's Pirates-Cardinals game, Matt Carpenter and Jon Jay executed a play that was far from normal.
