Carlos Gomez tumbles and fouls ball off his own helmet ... before homering later in the at-bat
Carlos Gomez fouls ball off helmet before hitting HR
When you break it down, the universe is just an enormous ball of highly explosive chaotic energy, with just enough of a tether connecting the millions of microscopic particles together to make a beautiful kind of sense.
Which is the kind of hitter Carlos Gomez is at the plate -- his swings a Big Bang-like explosion of energy that would cause oblique problems for lesser humans.
In the sixth inning of Friday night's game against the Angels, Gomez showed off this artfully controlled chaos. Facing Jered Weaver, Gomez took a massive hack and spun to the ground, sending his helmet flying and, as if it were preordained, fouling the ball off his tumbling headgear.
But Gomez, being this ball of tightly wound kinetic energy, knew he couldn't walk away from the plate with that as his only addition to the evening's entertainment. On Weaver's 2-2 pitch, Gomez drove the ball over the left-field fence, making sure to smack his helmet as he rounded the bases.
Chaos and beauty. It is the way of the world and, indeed, Gomez's very own at-bats.
