Celebrate Greg Maddux's longevity and 49th birthday with his last MLB win

Celebrate Greg Maddux's 49th b-day with his last win

Last year, for Greg Maddux's 48th birthday, we reminisced about the Hall of Famer's first MLB win -- his three-run complete game on Sept. 3, 1986 at the age of 20. For his 49th birthday, we're visiting the other end of the Maddux timeline: His last MLB win at the age of 42, on Sept. 27, 2008.

Maddux went six innings against the Giants for his 8th win of the season and 355th (!) of his career, allowing two hits and an earned run while striking out a pair. Fun fact: One of those strikeouts was a pinch-hitting Pablo Sandoval who, at the age of 22, was two full decades younger than Maddux.

Want more proof of Maddux's longevity? Squarely in middle-age, Mad Dog was still making spritely moves on the mound:

That win wasn't Maddux's last appearance on the mound -- he threw four innings of relief across three games that postseason -- but it was the last time America saw Maddux start an MLB game.
