Baseball reached peak '90s when fans at Yankee Stadium set the 'Macarena' world record

Peak '90s: 'Macarena' record at Yankee Stadium in '96

Mariners teal, crop tops, Jay Buhner's goatee, and a packed house in the Bronx: it doesn't get any more '90s than the above video of Yankees fans setting the world record for most people simultaneously doing the "Macarena."

The night was Aug. 16, 1996. Rookie shortstop Derek Jeter and the first-place Yankees were hosting Ken Griffey Jr., 20-year-old phenom Alex Rodriguez and the rest of the Mariners.

Broadway star Chita Rivera took the field at the end of the fifth inning to help lead the some-50,000 fans in attendance in the dance craze sweeping America.

The Yankees held a 4-3 lead at the time the crowd broke the record, thanks to RBIs from Paul O'Neil, Cecil Fielder, Mariano Duncan and Tino Martinez. A pinch-hit homer in the late goings by Mark Whiten and an RBI double from Doug Strange would be enough to lift the Mariners to a 6-5 win.

The Yankees got the last laugh, though, when they won the 1996 World Series, the first of four over the next five seasons.
