College batter catches fielders napping after pickle, scores on ball that never left the infield

Batter scores on ball that never left the infield

The most common way for a batter to score on a ball he hit is to just launch the ball over the fence and trot the bases at his leisure (hopefully with a solid bat flip in there to keep the rest of us entertained). Another way to do that would be to just race the fielders to each base and beat them there.

That's what Memphis infielder Brandon Montgomery did on Friday when he grounded into a fielder's choice.

His teammate Carter White was on second base at the time and got caught in a pickle between second and third. While the University of South Florida infielders worked together to tag the runner out, Montgomery made his way to second base safely, only to realize that the fielders were out of position -- so he helped himself to third:

Montgomery reached third safely, only to realize that the fielders were out of position AGAIN so he helped himself to home.

"No one was covering third ... everyone was just in a huddle so I took third," Montgomery said after the game. "And then the catcher was out there in the huddle arguing, so I just went and took home."

Got grit?

Montgomery's run was all the Tigers would need to knock off USF and advance in AAC play, but they lost their next game on Saturday morning. Check out the full replay in the video below.
