Daniel Nava befriends an 18-year-old cancer patient who shares his name

Daniel Nava befriends an 18-year-old cancer patient

Just six weeks before her high school graduation, 18-year-old Nava Rodriguez was diagosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), a serious blood cancer that aggressively attacks when found in young people.

However, when she first arrived at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., the teenager took some friendly ribbing from the nurses for her shirsey of choice: A Red Sox shirt with Daniel Nava's name and No. 29 on the back.

After Rays starter Jake Odorizzi made a trip to the hospital on Wednesday and met many of the patients, including Nava, he told his baseballing teammate Nava about the girl who shared his name.

On Friday, the Rays outfielder made a surprise visit, providing her with his new shirt -- a light blue Rays jersey -- complete with his, or should I say her name on the back.

Best of all, other than having a new friend and a spiffy new jersey, Nava finished her final chemotherapy treament on Saturday and has a standing invitation from the team once she's healthy enough to attend. And now she's got the right gear for it, too.
