David Ortiz and the Giants' first-base coach make the case for a new set of weird Gold Glove awards

Ortiz should win a DH Gold Glove Award for this catch

Since the implementation of the designated hitter in the American League in 1973, there has never been a Gold Glove Award given for exemplary defensive skills at the DH position, largely because designated hitters don't play defense.

David Ortiz aims to change that.

Big Papi was on third base in the first inning of a 5-2 Red Sox loss on Tuesday when rookie catcher Blake Swihart grounded a ball down the line. Ortiz, eager to show his smooth hands, ranged and made the play:

Later in the evening, Giants first-base coach Bill Hayes must have caught wind of the idea to honor non-fielders for their incredible defense because he threw his hat into the obscure Gold Glove Award ring with a wonderful barehanded snag of his own:

Basically, two of Tuesday night's best catches were made by guys without gloves who don't even play the field.
