David Wright kicks off 'The Wright Thing' community program to honor Sandy volunteers

After Hurricane Sandy, Jerry Chan led a group of volunteers door-to-door in the Lower East Side -- delivering food and supplies to more than 3,000 residents.

On Thursday, Chan was honored for his work by David Wright and "The Wright Thing" community program at Citi Field. The season-long initiative not only recognizes superb post-Sandy volunteers, but seeks to raise awareness that more work needs to be done as New York City continues the recovery and rebuilding process.

"It's been a very exciting day," Chan said. "I'm still very shocked by this."

Wright presented Chan with a signed mini-replica third base and seats behind home plate for the Pirates-Mets game.

"I don't think any of the people that we are honoring with this program are doing it for the notoriety," the Mets third baseman said. "They do it to help out their fellow neighbor and their community. These people are really the true leaders."
