Delino DeShields nicknamed Prince Fielder 'Uncle Phil,' wants to be telepathic
Delino DeShields' name might sound familiar to you, as well it should. His dad, also named Delino DeShields, is a 13-year MLB veteran who started with the Expos and is now the manager of Reds' Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats. But you should know the younger DeShields' name for other reasons. Here are a few:
The young Rangers outfielder was also named May's AL Rookie of the Month.
So, what else should you know about Delino? We sat down with him to ask baseball's most important question: Is a hot dog a sandwich?
As you can see in the video above, his answer is objectively right and true. He also shared some of his favorite baseball memories and told us who his favorite baseball player was when he was growing up (spoiler alert: it's not who you expect). He also mentioned that he'd like to be telepathic, either turning the Rangers into a crack squad of superheroes or giving them a pretty incredible advantage in on-field communication.
But not everything made it into the video, like DeShields' array of nicknames, one of which is "Snacks."
"I have a sweet tooth and I'm always eating. Prince [Fielder] always makes fun of me, saying, 'I don't know how anyone can eat that much and stay that size.'"
But DeShields came up with a pretty great nickname for Fielder, too.
"We do this kangaroo court thing and they all wear wigs and robes and stuff. Prince had his on and I said, 'You look like Uncle Phil' and then it just kind of stuck."
We definitely see it:
But the "Fresh Prince" comparisons don't end there. According to DeShields, Elvis Andrus is a mix of Will and Carlton, and appropriately, is the best dancer on the team. At least as long as he has his baseball soulmate Adrian Beltre.
"They do salsa stuff in the locker room. One of them is the guy and one of them is the girl. It's really funny, but it's also really good. You're like, 'Wow, I wish I knew how do that.'"
We all wish we could be more like Elvis and Adrian, Delino. We all do.
However, he does have another hidden talent. Apparently, he's a charades superstar. So if you ever find yourself playing parlor games with a bunch of baseball players, you know who to pick for your team first.
