Did you know Wily Mo Pena was born on National Pie Day?

Wily Mo Pena was born on National Pie Day

Jan. 23 is National Pie Day. It is also Wily Mo Pena's birthday. Coincidence? Probably. Reason to celebrate, regardless? Absolutely.

You see, we could either spend the day celebrating National Pie Day or celebrating Pena's 33rd birthday. Or we could celebrate both of them at the same time and bask in the combined delicious, homer-ific gloriousness of Jan. 23.

Now, we know what you're thinking: "Isn't pie day March 14?"

That's Congressionally-recognized Pi Day, whereas this is National Pie Day, with an "E." Pie, as apple, pumpkin, mincemeat, etc. Major League Baseball has a long-held love of pie:

The day was started in the 1970s by a man in Colorado who loved pie very much and wanted to celebrate the dessert on the same day as his birthday, Jan. 23. As far as we know, that man was not Wily Mo Pena. Pena was born in 1982, four years before the American Pie Council (yes, a real organization) made National Pie Day a legitimate thing in 1986.

We can only wonder, then, if instead of the traditional birthday cake, Pena was served birthday pie growing up. Perhaps this year someone will give Pena 84 pies in honor of his 84 MLB home runs.

Surely a man who can do something like this deserves some pie on his birthday:

So in honor of Wily Mo, his birthday, his rumored MLB comeback attempt and, of course, National Pie Day, let's celebrate today.

And just call him Wily Mo Piena.
