Donnie Baseball finally makes it into the Bleacher Creatures roll call
Don Mattingly ended his 14-year playing career with the Yankees in 1995. Yankee Stadium's Bleacher Creatures started their roll call tradition in 1997. When the Dodgers visited the Yankees on Wednesday, Mattingly -- now Los Angeles's manager -- finally had the chance to hear his name shouted in the roll call.
The Creatures have welcomed back other former Yankees (including Johnny Damon and Nick Swisher), but this was different. To "Bald" Vinny Milano, leader of the roll call, honoring Mattingly was "one of the most awesome things" the Creatures have ever done.
After the first pitch in the bottom of the first, the denizens of section 203 chanted "Donnie Baseball" over and over again. Mattingly appreciated the gesture.
"When I was here they never did that, so it was pretty cool," the Dodgers skipper said after the game.
Donnie acknowledged the Creatures with a tip of the cap from the dugout, something Bald Vinny was thrilled to see.
"He was my childhood hero," Milano said. "It means the absolute world to me."
