Fernando Rodney brings plantain to AT&T Park, believes it can help him pitch 100 mph
Fernando Rodney reportedly believes that plantains can help a pitcher throw 100 mph when combined with peas, rice, shrimp and avocados. So of course, the Dominican Republic's closer had the fruit sent from the D.R. to serve as a good-luck charm before Monday's WBC semifinal against the Netherlands.
After the game, Rodney, Edinson Volquez and manager Tony Pena went into more detail about the magical platano:
UPDATE, 3/21: According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the mystical fruit did not, in fact, come from the Dominican. Rodney got it from a friend in the stands in San Francisco -- but the results of the game proved the plantain's origin has no bearing on its luck-bringing qualities. (h/t Hardball Talk)
