George Brett picks up 3,000th hit, gets picked off

There are few moments as a baseball player more memorable than your 3,000th hit. Only 29 players in the history of the game have ever accomplished the feat (well, not including this guy), and it's one of the most storied numbers in all of sports. It's the culmination of a lifetime of hard work. In that moment, nothing else matters.

Well, nothing except ... running the bases. Because even hit No. 3,000 is still, you know, a hit. The kind that necessitates being a baserunner, which includes, say, being wary of any and all pick-off attempts. Sadly, this was a lesson that George Brett learned the hard way. On Sept. 30, 1992, he picked up a single against the Angels, etching his name into baseball history. He was rewarded with a trip back to the dugout:

And of course, this being George Brett, he was legitimately ticked off. After all, life-changing moments can wait -- there's a baseball game to win.
