11 years ago today, the Boston Red Sox signed David Ortiz

Happy Big Papi Day, Boston fans!
On this day in 2003, the Red Sox signed free agent slugger David Ortiz.
His career batting line in six seasons with the Twins: .266/.348/.461.
Of course, Ortiz's new home, Fenway Park, was perfectly suited to the power-hitting lefty. In his first season as Red Sox DH, Ortiz hit .288/.369/.592, with 31 homers. That performance was good enough to earn him the fifth place spot in the 2003 AL MVP voting.
You know the rest -- Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS:

And Game 5 too:

His speech following the Boston Marathon bombing:
His strident anti-landline stance:

Game 2 of the 2013 ALCS:
And, of course, his mind-bending 2013 World Series performance:

As if all that weren't enough, he followed it up by placing third in Boston's Mayoral race.
Happy Anniversary, Big Papi.
