10 crazy moments from Saturday's Red Sox-Cardinals World Series Game 3

With the World Series tied at one game a piece, Game 3 in St. Louis would be a big one for momentum. The Cardinals looked to build on their great showing in Game 2, while the Red Sox were hoping the offense that bolstered their Game 1 rout would return.

Would Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly be the next young hurler to step up big in the Fall Classic? Would David Ortiz forget to come on the field to play first base? Would these fans get their dream of wearing the Commissioner's Trophy on their head?

Kelly got off to a nice start, striking out Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury while flashing the leather (in a way) on a nifty play to get Shane Victorino at first:

Then, in the bottom of the inning, the Cardinals' bats got things off to a good start -- scoring two runs on four hits. Matt Holliday scored Matt Carpenter on this all-Matt RBI single:

And then super-catcher Yadier Molina brought Holliday home:

With the score 2-0 heading into the fourth, the Redbirds looked to pad that lead even further. Molina, David Freese and Jon Jay loaded the bases to start out the inning, but Boston starter Jake Peavy dug deep to record outs on the next three batters -- concluding with this popout to shortstop Stephen Drew to end the frame:

Clearly, the Red Sox offense took the opportunity to give Peavy some run support. Xander Bogaerts led off the top-half of the fifth with a triple:

And then came home on a Mike Carp fielder's choice, bringing the score to 2-1.

Then, in the sixth inning, the Red Sox once again got a runner into scoring position and brought him home on a Daniel Nava RBI single, tying the game at 2-2:

But the tie wouldn't last long.

In the seventh, with Boston reliever Craig Breslow on the mound, the Cardinals got hot again. Matt Carpenter led off with a single and Carlos Beltran got hit by a pitch, giving the Cards runners at first and second. 

They wouldn't be there long however -- Matt Holliday doubled to left field and the Cardinals jumped to a 4-2 lead:

If there's one thing we've learned this postseason, it's that you can't count the Red Sox out until the game is over.

In the top of the eighth, the Sox seemed determined to mirror the Cardinals, reaching base in the exact same way: Ellsbury with a single and Shane Victorino on a hit-by-pitch. Ellsbury eventually scored on a Daniel Nava fielder's choice, while Victorino came home after Bogaerts came up clutch once more for Boston, tying the score 4-4:

Then, the crowd at Busch Stadium was given one of the all-time craziest endings to a World Series game.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, and the score still tied 4-4, Yadier Molina singled on a soft fly ball to right field. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny opted to pinch-hit Allen Craig, who crushed a double to left field, advancing Molina to third base.

And then, everything in the world happened.

Jon Jay hit a ground ball to Dustin Pedroia, who threw Molina out at home plate -- the second out of the inning. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia then threw the ball to third base, trying to catch Craig advancing and push the game to extras.

Instead, the throw sailed by third baseman Will Middlebrooks and Craig started for home, tripping over the fallen Middlebrooks.

As he stumbled, third-base umpire Jim Joyce called obstruction on Middlebrooks and Craig was ruled safe at home, winning the game for the Cardinals:

According to umpire John Hirschbeck after the game, "obstruction is the act of a fielder obstructing a runner when not in the act of fielding a ball ... There does not have to be intent."

Jim Joyce, the umpire who made the call at third, explained further:

"The baserunner has every right to go unobstructed to home plate, and unfortunately for Middlebrooks he was right there. And there was contact, so he could not advance to home plate naturally."

It was a remarkable end to an incredible, back-and-forth game.

And guess what? Game 4 starts Sunday night.
