The race to 100 steals: Go, Dee Gordon, go!

The race to 100 steals, Go, Dee Gordon, go!

Check out the full-size chart here.

Since 1900, there have been only eight 100-steal seasons in Major League Baseball. Maury Wills was the first in 1962 and there were seven more over the next 25 years, with Rickey Henderson and Vince Coleman each accomplishing the feat three times in the early-to-mid '80s. But then the speed demons disappeared.

Since 1988 when Henderson stole 91 and Coleman swiped 88, no one has even topped 80. Jose Reyes came the closest with 78 in 2007.

All of that may change this year thanks to Dee Gordon. With 36 steals in 72 Dodgers games, Gordon's on pace to swipe 81 bags. That puts him ahead of where Henderson was through 72 games in '80 and '83, and just three steals behind where Wills was to that point in '62.

Rickey Henderson 1980 32

Vince Coleman 1986 45
Lou Brock 1974 47
Vince Coleman 1987 49

Rickey Henderson 1982 68

This season, Gordon has already grabbed 14 infield hits and seven bunt singles to go along with a Majors-leading 5.7 BsR, a FanGraphs statistic that measures the ability to take an extra base along with stolen base prowess. And of the seven games this season where a player had at least three steals, Gordon has four of them including, yep, the only four-steal game.

Just look at some of these swipes:

That being said, Gordon's got a long way to go. A recent slump combined with a hip injury has seen the speedster go a season-long nine games without a stolen base. If Gordon wants to continue his pursuit of the century mark, he'll need to keep those legs healthy, get on base and avoid hitting himself in the head with baseballs.
