Happy birthday to 'Steady' Eddie Murray

Eddie Murray's nickname couldn't have been more appropriate. For 21 seasons, the first baseman was a model of consistent hitting excellence. Murray had some spectacular years for the Orioles in the early '80s, including a standout '83 campaign in which he mashed a career-high 33 homers, finished second in the AL MVP voting and hit two home runs in the clinching game of the World Series (catch those in the video above).

As his career extended into the late '90s, making stops with the Dodgers, Mets, Indians and Angels, Murray remained an effective batter year in and year out. His 3,000th hit, recorded in '95, looked like this:

And his 500th home run came a year later:

Murray is one of only four players in MLB history (along with Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Rafael Palmeiro) to reach both those milestones. Happy 58th, Eddie.
