Pitching at the Major League level requires a lot of concentration. There are so many little things to focus on -- mechanics, release point, location, the hulking slugger just dying to hit one out of the park, etc etc.

A pitcher is a finely-tuned instrument, is what we're saying, and even the slightest distraction can throw the whole thing off -- like, say, an umpire calling time just before the pitch, as poor Hector Santiago can attest.
