How Billy Butler and Josh Reddick could have decided who wears number 16

How Butler and Reddick could've chosen who won no. 16

The A's signed Billy "Country Breakfast" Butler on Wednesday, cornering the market on players with food-related names. But with the former KC slugger in Oakland, they had another surplus -- players with the number "16." Josh Reddick had the number first, and initially, he indicated that he wasn't going to give it up easily:

They ended up working it out like adults ...

But as a disinterested third party, we've uncovered a few contests that could have settled the matter, if Butler and Reddick were so inclined:

Wrestling Match

Even though Butler's got more than 50 pounds on him, you'd think that lifelong wrestling fan J-Red would be a shoe-in to win this one. But let's think this through a little bit - they've both got to play for the same team in the spring, and it's essential to avoid any inadvertent injuries. Therefore, instead of actually wrestling, they can hang out at the arcade and play each other in Wrestlemania.

Eating Contest

Since Billy Butler's nickname is "Country Breakfast," many fans assume he could smoke Josh Reddick in an eating contest. But, again, we're looking out for health, here. Plus, we don't want anyone to hate the sight of hot dogs forever. Instead, whoever comes up with the best food-related nickname for Josh Reddick first wins. We'll start: Josh "TV Dinner" Reddick. Josh Redd-" Beans and Rice"-ick. Rogan Josh. Take it away, gentleman.

Three Legged Race

Butler and Reddick obviously cannot run this race together, because that would defeat the purpose. However, we suggest they choose another number 16 from around the leagues to be their partner. Andre Ethier, perhaps? Will Middlebrooks or Kolten Wong? Whichever pair wins gets the right to the number 16 for all eternity, or at least until they end up on the same team and the process starts all over again.

Karaoke-Off

By this point, Josh Reddick should know "Careless Whisper" well enough to sing the entire song without the prompter. But he'd face stiff competition from Butler, who would presumably break out one of his musician namesake's Curtis Mayfield-produced soul hits:

Of course, sometimes it's best to keep it simple:

Billy, we hope your Scrabble skills are up to snuff. But if not, why not take this fan's suggestion?

Update: This post has been updated to reflect the fact that Reddick has indeed conceded number 16 to Butler.
