In honor of Madison Bumgarner, here are the 14 other MLB SI Sportsmen of the Year covers

From 1954 to 2013, Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year was awarded to 15 professional baseball players and one entire team, the 2004 Red Sox -- a feat that spanned 14 SI covers (Mark McGwire & Sammy Sosa and Randy Johnson & Curt Schilling were co-Sportsmen in 1998 and 2001, respectively). In 2014, 60 years after the award was first given out, Madison Bumgarner brings MLB's total to 15.

Bumgarner joins a list that includes Stan Musial (1957), Sandy Koufax (1965) and Derek Jeter (2009), so yes, it's pretty good company. And there shouldn't be any doubt that he belongs. From Tom Verducci's accompanying SI profile of Bumgarner, referring to his 2014 postseason heroics: "And while he's been an outstanding pitcher for the last five years, his Sportsman candidacy was so sudden and seemingly out of nowhere that it makes him the most unique Sportsman in recent memory."

With roughly a quarter of all Sportsman of the Year awards -- which, fun fact, are urns -- in the hands of MLB greats, and in celebration of Bumgarner's addition to this hallowed list, let's take a moment to look back on all the previous Sports Illustrated covers honoring MLB players. Don't mind us if we get a little misty-eyed from nostalgia:
