Surprises at Derek Jeter Day included Michael Jordan and a tribute from space
Here are the highlights from Derek Jeter Day
As Derek Jeter's final season comes to a close, other teams throughout the Leagues have paid him their #re2pects. But on Sunday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio officially declared September 7, 2014 Derek Jeter Day.
Yankee Stadium made sure it was ready for the party, replacing all of its flags with Derek Jeter's final season logo, as well as painting it on the field:
And tricking out the bases as well:

Even the clouds rearranged themselves, forming Jeter's name in the sky (sort of):
Jeter's grandmother and parents were in attendance, as well as his sister and crowd-savvy young nephew:
There were so many other names on the guest list that not even Peter Jackson could fit them in a single shot. They included Commissioner-Elect Rob Manfred, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, former teammates Hideki Matsui, Tino Martinez and Paul O'Neill:
Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada:
And former manger Joe Torre:
As well as another historically great shortstop. No, not the ghost of Honus Wagner - it was Cal Ripken, Jr.:
The 2014 class of the Turn2 Foundation's "Jeter's Leaders" program also joined him on the field:
They also unveiled a banner depicting their namesake in Yankee Stadium's Great Hall:

But the celebrations of the Captain's talents were not confined to this world alone. In addition to all of the earthly admirers, space hero and defeater of the Monstars Michael Jordan was also in attendance:
Oh,and three actual astronauts on the International Space Station saluted the Captain from the stars:
As well as members of the US military:
Not to worry, the team wasn't all show and no substance. The Yankees gave their favorite son a few gifts, including a massage machine, a crystal engraved with his final season logo and, presented by George Steinbrenner's grandchildren:
A check for Turn2, made out in the amount of $222,222.22:
And a 10 day vacation to Tuscany, in case Derek Jeter would like to start his post-retirement publishing company with his own Eat, Pray, Love-style memoir.
At the end of the ceremony, Jeter addressed the crowd, thanking his fans for supporting him throughout his 20-year-career:
The fans had something to say, too:
Then Jeter got ready to take the field with his team, only to find that they had let him enter alone for one more enthusiastic ovation:
