It's Valentine's Day, so let's talk a little about Ellis Valentine

We remember Ellis Valentine on Valentine's Day

There have been seven players in Major League history with the last name Valentine (and two with Valentine as a first name). Others have gained renown for their managerial exploits, but one stands out for his on-field career: Ellis Valentine, who played for four teams from 1975-85.

Valentine's best years came with the Expos of the late '70s. Part of a dynamic young Montreal outfield along with Andre Dawson and Warren Cromartie, Valentine's best season was 1977, when he posted a .293/.331/.504 line, smacked 25 homers and earned his only All-Star selection at age 22.

Ellis was best known for his throwing ability, of which former Expos and Giants manager Felipe Alou said, "There's a plateau where you can't throw the ball any harder and you can't be any more accurate. That was Ellis Valentine."

Unfortunately, a fastball to the head broke Valentine's cheekbone midway through the 1980 season and he was never the same. He came back wearing this mask made from a cut-up football helmet, but hit .248 with 31 homers over 278 games from 1981-1985.

Valentine bounced from the Mets to the Angels to the Rangers before retiring at age 31 in 1985. But his legacy lives on: through his amazing name, through his appearances on Fantasy Island that you can find on YouTube and on Twitter, where he tweets @EValentine17.
