James Shields gives foster children a second chance
It's no secret that James Shields makes magic happen on the mound. But his finest work may be hovering a couple levels above the field in the Big Game James Club suite.
The club is comprised of 50 foster kids, split into teams of 10. During each homestand, the teams get to watch Rays baseball in the suite and hang out with Shields on the field pregame.
Shields started the club with his wife, Ryane, in July, 2010. Ever since, the foster children have celebrated birthday parties and made lifelong memories in the suite. Many have seen their grades improve and their future aspirations grow. Even the simple things can have a lasting impact -- like making name tags. For some of the childen, it's the first time they've ever had anything permanent with their name on it.
