Jhonny Peralta returns to action after clam chowder-induced absence

For Superman, it was kryptonite. For Achilles, 'twas his heel. But for Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, his greatest weakness is New England clam chowder. Delicious, delicious New England clam chowder.

Evidently, Peralta is allergic to the creamy soup -- a fact of which he is keenly aware. Thinking an unlabeled pot prepared by Detroit's chefs Monday afternoon was potato soup, Peralta helped himself to a heaping mound of the stuff, eating about half a bowl before realizing the gastrointestinal pain he had unwittingly unleashed.

The ailment ultimately forced Peralta to miss Monday's game against the Mets, but he returned to the lineup for Tuesday's tilt with the Phillies.

After Tampa Bay Rays reliever Joel Peralta injured himself in February ordering sandwiches, it was only a matter of time before his countryman and fellow guy-named-Peralta felt the need to outperform him in matters of food-related distress.
