Jim Crews officially became SLU's new basketball coach and tossed a Busch Stadium first pitch -- all in 24 hours
One day Jim Crews is being introduced as the new men's basketball head coach for Saint Louis University, the next he's throwing out the first pitch at a Cardinals game.
How many people can lay claim to those two accomplishments in a 24-hour time span?
As the interim head coach, Crews guided the Billikens to one of their best seasons in program history: A school-record 28 wins, Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament championships and a run to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament -- all while dealing with the passing of their legendary head coach, Rick Majerus.
Crews, who grew up in the small town of Normal, Ill., is a lifelong Cardinals fan. You can imagine he was pretty pumped about the opportunity to throw out the first pitch with his team lined up behind home plate.
"Oh I've been practicing the last couple days and getting my arm right," Crews said. "I've thrown first pitches at games before but never in a big league stadium."
If there were nerves, none were shown. The Sporting News national coach of the year fired the ball just off the plate to Cardinals rookie Shelby Miller.
Not a bad way to start your first official day on the job.
