Throwback Photo of the Day: Happy Birthday, Joe DiMaggio!

Throwback Photo of the Day: Happy birthday, Joe!

Considering that Joe DiMaggio accumulated 2,214 career knocks and famously hit safely in 56 consecutive games, we're guessing that he wouldn't have had much trouble making contact with the massive birthday cake pictured above.

Joltin' Joe was born on Nov. 25, 1914, so today would have been his 101st birthday.

He retired from professional baseball in 1951, but picked up his bat again to pose for the image above, taken at his 50th birthday celebration at the Sheraton-Palace Hotel in San Francisco. The bash was the talk of the town back in November of 1964, as the capacity was capped at 1,000, but many more were anxious to get their hands on tickets to see Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and other big-name stars honor the Yankee Clipper.

DiMaggio's family moved to San Francisco when he was only a year old. The Yankee Clipper got his start playing semi-pro for the San Francisco Seals and later retired to the Bay Area, so it was only fitting that he rang in the big 5-0 in San Fran.
