Of course Johnny Bench hit the last home run of his career on 'Johnny Bench Night'
Johnny Bench hit his last HR on 'Johnny Bench Night'
Johnny Bench played in 2,158 games and caught 1,742 over 17 years. He was a Rookie of the Year, 14-time All-Star (including 13 years in a row) and two-time National League MVP. And when it was his night, it was his night.
On Sept. 17, 1983, 32 years ago, the Reds hosted "Johnny Bench Night" at Riverfront Stadium. It was a whole game dedicated to him, but two specific things Bench did really made it his night.
First, it was the last game Bench ever played as a catcher -- which he did, as the New York Times put it, "for old times' sake."
Second, he hit the final home run of his career: a two-run shot to left in the third inning that tied the game.
I mean, was Bench not going to homer on Johnny Bench Night? Though the Astros ended up winning by a run, it was Bench's night, and he made it so.
