Brandon Crawford's comebacker scares the glove right off Johnny Cueto's hand
Comebacker scares the glove right off Cueto's hand
In the top of the second inning of Thursday's Giants-Reds game, Johnny Cueto threw a changeup to Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford, who promptly sent the ball flying right back at the pitcher's mound.
Cueto spun around and reached out to grab it -- and that's when his glove said "NOPE" and got the heck out of the way, taking off for safety and landing somewhere around third base.
I gotta give the glove credit for acting with such an instinct for self-preservation. It isn't every day you see an inanimate object move on its own free will to put itself out of harm's way.
Had Cueto's throw been intentional and had the glove hit the ball, it would've been an illegal play. But the glove was acting on its own -- wouldn't you have done the same, considering the ball left Crawford's bat at 89 mph? -- and it missed the ball entirely. So Zack Cozart fielded the grounder and Crawford was out at first.
It's ok, Glove. We all get scared sometimes.
