Today in Postseason History: Jose Reyes hits a leadoff HR for the Mets in Game 6 of the NLCS
Today in Postseason History: Reyes' leadoff NLCS HR
The year was 2006 -- "The Grudge 2" was the No. 1 movie in America, Justin Timberlake had just brought sexy back and Noah Syndergaard wasn't old enough to drive. Oh, and the Mets had their backs against the wall in the National League Championship Series.
Under manager Willie Randolph, the Amazins had won 97 games in the regular season and swept the Dodgers in the NL Division Series, only to run into some guy named Albert Pujols and the Cardinals. The teams split the first two games at Shea Stadium, then split Games 3 and 4 in St. Louis. After Pujols homered in a 4-2 Cards win in Game 5, it was win or go home for the Mets the next night.
They needed someone to come up big early to fire the team up so they could stave off elimination. That someone was Jose Reyes, and he put the third pitch of the game over the right-center-field wall:

It was the only home run of the game, but Paul Lo Duca and Shawn Green later added RBI singles to propel the Mets to a 4-2 win and force a deciding Game 7 in Queens. The Mets lost that Game 7, and the Cardinals went on to win the World Series. Nine years later, the Mets are back in the NLCS and hold a 1-0 series lead over the Cubs thanks in part to a big Daniel Murphy home run.
