The last time the Yankees were shut out in back-to-back games, Mo Vaughn homered against them

Yanks last shut out in back-to-back games in 1999

The Yankees were shut out by the red-hot Blue Jays for the second straight day on Sunday afternoon. Normally, this wouldn't be that big of a deal, but for New York, it was the first such occurence in 16 years! Yes, the last time was May 12 and May 13, 1999 -- a Major League record of 2,665 games. Chuck Finley pitched to a 1-0 win in the first game, while Omar Olivares picked up the W on day two. Mo Vaughn provided the big highlight on the second day -- hitting a solo homer off Yanks starter Hideki Irabu. The video has been lost over time (likely destroyed by the Y2K Bug), but we're guessing it looked something like this:

So, what else was happening in the world 16 years ago? Here's a quick recap.

Top Song

Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas hooked up to win Record of the Year, while Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" topped the Billboard charts from May 8 - June 4:

At the Movies

"The Mummy," Brendan Fraser's long-awaited follow-up to "Blast from the Past," was the No. 1 movie at the box office that week. The documentary about the life of Lester Burnham ended up taking home Best Picture at the Oscars.

What's on TV?

"E.R." and "Friends" were both hitting their strides, but everybody who's anybody was watching "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" and failing miserably while playing along at home.

What was everybody talking about?

Furby babies, Pokemon and Britney Spears were all the rage. You also weren't cool if you weren't telling everybody you ran into, "I see dead people:"

Oh, and there was also that Y2K thing. Families were stacking cans of beans in their basement in preparation for a possible apocalypse when, in fact, all we were hit with was another Will Smith jam to ring in the new Willenium.

In the Sports World

John Elway carried the Broncos to Super Bowl glory, David Robinson and Tim Duncan helped the Spurs to an NBA championship (something Duncan continues to do) and the always-fashionable Payne Stewart won the US Open before tragically passing away a few months later.

In baseball, Pedro Martinez took home the AL Cy Young Award -- compiling perhaps the best pitching season ever, Randy Johnson won the NL Cy Young, Ivan Rodriguez was awarded the AL MVP and Chipper Jones took home the NL honors. Super Joe McEwing also entered the league, and the world would never be the same.

And that Yankee team? They won the AL East and went on to sweep the Braves in the World Series -- their third in four years.
