Matt Carpenter’s parents picked the right day to drive 600 miles to St. Louis

When Rick and Tammie Carpenter left Prosper, Texas at 3:30 a.m. CT Wednesday, they didn't even know if their son, Matt, would play for the Cardinals in Game 3 of the NLCS. But that didn’t matter at the time, as they were making the trip St. Louis to support him whether in the lineup or on the bench.

As it turns out, not only did Matt enter the game after a Carlos Beltran injury, he smacked a two-run homer that would prove to be the deciding margin, and made a great defensive play in the 9th inning to help close out the win.

"We would have walked this far to see him do that," said Rick.

For Matt, the dedication didn't go unnoticed.

"They both obviously work and they left this morning, took off work at I think like 3:30 in the morning and drove up," said the utility man. "I'm not sure how long a drive it is ‑‑ I think it's like nine hours ‑‑ and just drove straight to the park and were in the stands tonight."
