Mets set new record ... for cheesesteaks eaten

Mets set new record for cheesesteaks eaten

Baseball is a game of hallowed numbers. 56 games. 511 wins. .406 average.

Well, you had better add a new one: 103. That's the number of cheesesteaks the Mets consumed at Citizen's Bank Park, breaking the previous record that sat somewhere in the mid-80s.

As Mike Vorkonuv reported, during a rainout on April 30th, the Mets zeroed in on the record, downing more than two cheesesteaks per person. Some, like bullpen catchers Dave Racaniello and Eric Langill, stepped up to help their less gluttonous teammates. Earlier that month, Langill had broken Racaniello's record of 14 steaks consumed in a three-game series with 17. They're like the Michael Phelps of competitive sandwich eating.

For those wondering, there are rules in place for how a team can consume these sandwiches. They can only be eaten before batting practice starts, after batting practice ends but before the game, and for an hour after the game finishes. This is probably less to maintain competitive balance and more to prevent some reliever from falling into a food coma in the sixth inning.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a trip to Philadelphia that I have to start training for.
