The Hot Stove was scalding when the Mets signed three-time Cy Young winner Pedro Martinez
On this day in '04, Mets signed Pedro

Even if you were paying close attention to Pedro Martinez at the turn of the Millennium, a quick glance at his numbers with the Red Sox will seem like some sort of uniquely positive Y2K glitch.
From 1998-04, Pedro logged 1,383 2/3 innings for the Sox and was worth a staggering 53.8 wins above replacement. He struck out 1,683 batters, tossed 22 complete games, won two AL Cy Young Awards and -- oh yeah -- helped vanquish the Curse of the Bambino with Boston's first World Series championship in 86 years.
Then -- just three months later -- he traded that red "B" on his cap for a brighter shade of blue and way brighter shade of orange. On Dec. 15, 2004, the Mets introduced Pedro (and his four-year, $53 million contract) in a press conference at Shea Stadium.

Martinez went on to earn that contract, leading MLB in WHIP in 2005 and maintaining a 3.88 ERA over his four seasons with the Mets. After the deal ran out, Pedro latched on to the 2009 Phillies, for whom he pitched with in the 2009 Fall Classic.
The Baseball Writers' Association of America voted Martinez into the Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2015. He's wearing a Red Sox hat in his plaque.
