Mic check! Robbie Cano fouls one off John Sterling's microphone
Yankees' radio play-by-play man John Sterling was announcing a routine Robinson Cano at-bat on Monday afternoon against the Rays when disaster struck.
"Well, here's the 3-1. Swung on and popped foul back ..." Then ... silence.
Had Sterling gotten up to get a sandwich? Was he off to pet one of Tropicana Field's famous Rays?
Finally, the mystery was solved. Sterling hadn't gone anywhere. A Cano foul ball had projectiled backwards and hit Sterling's microphone, momentarily silencing the legendary broadcaster. Lesson learned: When Cano is at the plate, always have a backup mic handy.
