Mike Krukow fondly remembers the time Dave Winfield wanted to destroy him
Dave Winfield was a great athlete. He was a 6-foot-6 outfielder who was drafted by the NBA, ABA, NFL and MLB. He was a 12-time All-Star, a six-time Silver Slugger Award winner and a World Series champion.
Of all the people who could charge the mound, you really wouldn't want it to be him.
Former pitcher and current Giants commentator Mike Krukow once faced down that sight, after hitting Winfield with an inside pitch. At the last second, Krukow's catcher Barry Foote caught Winfield from behind, tackling him to the ground.
Winfield was at AT&T Park for Saturday's game against the Padres, inspiring Krukow to retell the events.
He said he makes sure to send Foote a card every birthday and Christmas, because that's what you do when someone saves your life.
