It's been 10 years since Mike Lowell pulled off a very sneaky, very classic hidden-ball trick

Mike Lowell's 2005 hidden-ball trick was a classic

Let us put on our Superman capes and fly around the world backward, turning back the clocks 10 years. The date is Aug. 10, 2005. It is the top of the eighth inning as the D-backs trail the Marlins, 6-5. Pinch-hitter Tony Clark hits a one-out single to Marlins left fielder Miguel Cabrera, in his third MLB season. Luis Terrero advances to third as the potential tying run.

Everyone returns to stasis and awaits Craig Counsell's at-bat. Terrero steps off the bag toward home, hoping to get a jump. But Marlins pitcher Todd Jones does not step onto the rubber to deliver a pitch to Counsell. He does not have the ball.

Third baseman Mike Lowell does.

And then, in a second, we are all Counsell, trying to figure out what in the world we just witnessed.

It was a classic, perfectly executed hidden-ball trick.

After the throw from Cabrera, Lowell never got rid of the ball. He kept it in his glove where it sat -- waiting, watching, scheming. With Terrero off the bag, Lowell leaned over and calmly laid the tag for the second out of the inning. Jones followed by striking out Counsell, and the D-backs' threat was ended.

Clever, Mr. Lowell. Very clever.
