Mike Pelfrey gets ball stuck in his glove, throws the whole thing to first base

Ball sticks in Pelfrey's glove, so he throws it all

The Marlins and Twins were tied, 4-4, in the top of the fourth inning during Thursday's Spring Training game, when Mike Pelfrey fielded a grounder up the middle … and the ball got stuck in his glove.

So, he did what any ballplayer with such a conundrum would do: He took a few strides toward first base and threw the whole dang thing to Joe Mauer for the out, glove and all. There's no time for ball extraction when Adeiny Hechavarria is storming down the baseline.

"Obviously, he hit the ball back to me and I thought made a good play," Pelfrey said. "I thought, 'sweet,' but then I kept reaching and reaching, and it wasn't coming. So I immediately looked at [Hechavarria], and if you play this game you're faster than me, and it was going to be a foot race so I took off as an element of surprise. But luckily I got over there and beat him to it."

"I've seen replays but I'd never seen it live," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "That was entertaining. I don't know who was more panicked on it, Joe or Mike. But when he flipped it, I just envisioned the ball coming out. I wasn't sure how well it was wedged in there from my angle. But it was some free entertainment."

If you look closely at the play, you can see the moment when Pelfrey considers ripping off his entire arm at the socket and tossing it over to Mauer. But this was probably easier.
