Minnesota State breaks baseball in 41-20 Division II victory

Minnesota State breaks baseball in 41-20 Div. II win

With 16 shutouts already this season going into Saturday's action, you may be hungry for some runs. Well, apparently the Division II Minnesota State Mavericks heard your plea.

In the second game of their doubleheader against the Bemidji State University Beavers, the Mavericks won by a score of 41-20. You read that right: 41-20. And no, as far as I can tell, this wasn't one of Jon Bois' Breaking Madden experiments:

After Minnesota State won Game 1 by the much more reasonable score of 10-9, the two teams combined for 56 hits (an NCAA Div. II record), 17 walks, nine home runs, eight errors and, perhaps not surprisingly, no strikeouts.  It was even a relatively close game with the Mavericks leading 27-20 before exploding for 14 runs in the top of the eighth to end the game an inning early.

To put that all in perspective, coming into Saturday, the MLB's leader in runs this season was the Athletics with 32 and the Tigers and A's were tied for the league lead in hits with 53.

Bemidji State University shouldn't feel all that bad for the loss. After all, my alma mater, Division III's Emerson College, has dropped 35 games in a row.
