First Lowell, Mass., tomorrow the world.

The Lowell Spinners, Class A Short Season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, have long made a habit of attempting to enshrine themselves within the Guinness Book of World Records. Their latest attempt takes place Friday, when they look to shatter the existing "simultaneous fist bump" world record.

This attempt, which will occur in the middle of the fourth inning, is part of a "bump out cancer" fundraiser staged in conjunction with fist-bumping Boston Bruins super-fan (and leukemia survivor) Liam Fitzgerald. Fans will be asked to dap their neighbor at a designated time, with the goal being to exceed the previous mark of 1,082 simultaneous fist bumps. Fitzgerald, 9, will emcee the proceedings.

This attempt, which occurs just six days after Mother Nature thwarted the Spinners' attempt to establish a new "Longest Wave" record, follows in a grand Spinners tradition. The team has previously attempted to set a "most people popping bubble wrap" world record, as well as a hygienic and heroic "simultaneous dental flossing" mark. Guinness didn't certify either attempt, but that didn't negate the effort.

The Spinners have been proactive with these record-setting endeavors, despite, or perhaps because of, the fact that the apocalypse is nigh. On Sunday they give away "Balking Dead" zombie bobbleheads, perhaps setting a new world record for "fans screaming in horror as they walk through the entrance gates."
